Happy International Women's Day

We need more such days to honor women’s achievements and raise a flag for a gender-equal society. Here in adesso, we aim to spread awareness about women’s empowerment and women’s rights all over the world.

As in many industries, there are plenty of arguments on the lack of gender diversity in technology and IT. However, research shows that women are still less and less earning bachelor’s degrees in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) subjects. Despite the fact that the growth of STEM and the industry's labor supply curve has been upward sloping, women are missing out on these positions.

At adesso, we believe that it is important to be aware of the benefits of gender diversity in the workplace, to not miss out on human's talents, and the power of a more balanced workplace because every good idea requires a collective effort and different perspectives from all human beings.

We have spoken to four adessi, each of them making adesso a greater place to work. Here they share their personal experiences, views on the frustrations in the IT industry, and how they are achieving a thriving career in technology.

Happy International Women’s Day!

Thanks to my previous achievements and concrete contributions to transformation projects, I started working at adesso before I had worked for various companies in the IT industry.

As well as almost all the industries, the IT industry is also predominantly male. This is the case in all countries around the world and women facing challenges in business life that is not something that can stay hidden anymore. As long as you are sure of yourself and your contributions, and show your self-confidence while expressing yourself, I think that any difficulties can be dealt with. Being my authentic self, and finding like-minded allies with whom you can build professional and personal bonds, is key to peaceful and successful work life. I also see it as a great success when I can show that as women, there are areas where I can produce more value-added results than men.

Women leaders, such as Florence Nightingale, have always been profiles that I take as an example. I have adopted the vision of being a practical and forward-thinking kind of woman my whole life.

Even though I am fairly new in the workforce, I have had great experiences throughout my work-life. I have known adesso from my friends that are now colleagues also, they were eager to tell me about a position opening that they thought was a great fit for me and that’s how I started working here.

I believe in the equality of sexes and am also confident that in the near future women will be more active in the field of technology and IT. While I would have been much happier with a balanced work environment, I don’t think it imposes a problem for me on a daily basis.

There are too many people from different areas of my life that inspire me from an author to a CEO or a family member to a friend. I’m trying my best to take the best bits and pieces of these inspiring people to incorporate them into my life. I take inspiration from all around me because every human being, in my opinion, has a certain quality to themselves whether it be good or bad.

I have started working at adesso Turkey as an intern during my senior year in college. After graduation, I got an offer for and now I am a Java developer with almost 2 years of experience.

I have never felt any discouragement or obstacle as a woman developer. It is true that men outnumber women in the tech industry, but I believe that the quantity does not necessarily mean dominance. Although there is a fact that we as women must be more self-confident and strong, and not be intimidated by this status-quo.

There are several people who inspire me to challenge and improve myself in every aspect of my life. In my opinion, a role model is an inspiration, not only to improve yourself but also to make a difference around you, to empower others as well. The common characteristic of my role models is that they are not self-centered by any means. They try to lift others around them up, because they are able to realize that they cannot reach their full potential alone. I also try to follow this path because I believe that regardless of your occupation, gender or ethnicity; you can implement this principle and perhaps inspire others.

As well as having good experiences, I also had bad experiences in terms of gender gaps in business life.

While my previous work experiences have not been related to the IT industry and but they were still predominantly male industries, I started working here without prior knowledge about the work environment and adesso culture. Now, I believe and recognize that when women prove themselves in terms of competencies, men tend to realize the power of women here.

We are working with all my teammates, we feed our continuous support to each other at adesso. I feel stronger here because I have the opportunity to work without feeling that I have to constantly prove myself as a woman.

I think the world we live in offers so many inspirations coming from different sources I never had to look up to someone specific in any area. I would definitely say that my greatest inspiration is coming from my teammates here at adesso. I feel confident working in such a team where I can be my own self and does not have to act like somebody else.
